Amidst all the “save the world; let’s make it a better place” ethos of the health industry at large there is a deeper and darker side. One that you may well have never come across. It’s the ‘us versus them’ war; a story that has been played out time and again through all manner of industries – and it’s a war that doesn’t appear to be growing old. We all accept that, when it comes to health, other people do not believe what we believe. We know that there are opposing views to oppose every view, and for those who’ve ever begun a battle of science we also know that there are studies to oppose every study! So we base our beliefs not only on science and written or visual evidence, but also on our own innate logic about what seems right, coupled with the reality of what we can prove or disprove on our own physiology. I’m talking about the war between the carnivores and herbivores. Yesterday I got trapped as an (almost) lone carnivore in the midst of a group of VERY committed herbivores. So committed in fact, that, well – see for yourself. What I’m showing you here today is 30-minutes worth of back and forth from a Facebook comment thread I jumped in on earlier this week. You can read my commentary, or just the comment screenshots; that’ll definitely give you the story! I know, I know, I should have walked away from this conversation or probably never even have started it, and possibly I should just let it go now. But hey - it’s been a while since I’ve had a good rant! And truthfully? I’d love to get your feedback on this.

Am I being completely delusional to suggest that we can all keep our different views and still have basic human compassion and respect?

Should I do as my attackers do and look at anyone who doesn’t accept my views with a mix of disdain, pity, and a ‘why waste time on the lost’, sort of attitude? Would I be doing the right thing in trying to spread what I believe to be right and factual by responding with lists upon lists of studies, even stuff that I’ve seen repeatedly undoing the infamous China Study and other well-known anti-meat texts? My point of just trying to all respect each other as humans was completely swept up in an attack on my beliefs, and an assumption that they’re not factual. I chose not to respond with the facts of my case because really, why bother? I certainly don’t have a self-appointed mission to convert non-meat eaters into flesh-tearing-beasts such as myself.

My mission, with my business, the example I try to set in my own life, and through this blog as well as all my writing, is to inspire and to empower people – YOU – to take control of your health, your body, and even your life. To live your best life, dare I say! Yes, I also aim to educate, but to do so in a compassionate manner.

My personal mission with my writing is to feel good about making you and my other readers feel good both inside and out (and I’m talking physically as well as emotionally), not to feel sanctimonious and puffed up about how effectively I tore someone else down!

Nor would I imagine for a second that such an approach might be effective in sharing my message or ‘converting’ those who I may quietly (or not apparently ) see to be mis-led! I’ve given up on trying to be a writer who summaries science as

a) my passion is not purely in stats and figures,

b) I know you guys want inspiring and interesting food for thought rather than lists of links and research to wade through, and

c) the people who want me to ‘prove’ something to them are never asking out of a genuine desire for me to do that.

Now I may not always succeed, but when I write, I try to respect where other people are coming from, and the fact that they are entitled to form their own beliefs based on their own experiences and research.

Yes, I hope that my writing promotes change in the way people see healthy living, fat loss, and even in the way they follow their life purpose or passion, but I simply cannot come to terms with trying to change someone by being patronising or insulting.

It just doesn’t make sense to me!

And I know I’m not alone; in the midst of all this back and forth I received 2 private messages from people I didn’t know, saying they agreed with me and thought it was good that I was standing up against the attacking attitude put fort.

So how about you – does it make sense to you?

Should I be spouting forth science in an effort to show how informed I am and how uninformed others are?

Or should I just do as I’m told and run along … back to this blog and other happy places where I know people will be nice to me and each other?

Perhaps I have it all wrong; perhaps the health industry should be about verbally beating the ‘non-believers’ into either submission or intimidated withdrawal?

Is it so naive to think we can all get along as we ‘press play’?

Kat PS: Writing this piece has reminded me why I blog – it’s not just about ‘eat this; eat that’, ‘do this; do that’, it’s also about being passionate about something and wanting to hear the thoughts of a like-minded community! Thankyou for being part of my community.

Fortunately for you (she says cheekily) I was interviewed on just this topic on “The Cleansing Queen” Mary Bacon‘s radio show. Mary’s show is on Sydney’s Lifestyle Today and I was honoured to be invited to join her and discuss my thoughts on fat loss, health, and some of the important points covered in my book.

The link to the audio is just below. Do take the time to listen or download it to your iPod for later. Here is just a taste of what I cover on this info-packed interview:

How for the first 5 years of my health career I only knew the tip of the ice-berg about getting great results – and what I’ve learned since

The lowdown on my book and how detailed it is: I had to go back through every little gem I’d ever heard over the years to put it all together; which is why it took 26 months!

Healthy foods that make you fat

The carbohydrate thing – whether there really are rules, and if so then what those rules consist of

How you create new fat cells – and how to stop that process!

A common way people like you are malnourished

Pg 68: Taking the grain test

Do you really need to go gluten free?

Are you unknowingly sabataging your fat loss efforts

How to look good naked

What you can do to protect yourself and your family against modern living

How to slow the aging process!

The ultimate price that you DON’T want to pay.

Here is the audio:

Can you imagine living in such a way that instead of struggling to experience the life you want to live, you can use exceptionally powerful, proven principles to change everything, and do it faster than you ever thought possible? Can you?

I can. And I’ll tell you how, but first a question that kinda relates to my main point today – do you read much? Me, I read a lot. Mostly on my iPad these days, although I am still a sucker for a real-life page turner. And for a great bookshop! Sigh … excuse me while I drift away into fantasies of coffee and books. Okay, I’m back. Mostly I read self-help-y, change-your-life type stuff. By this I mean anything related to nutrition, to training, to hormones, sleep, goal-setting, productivity, wealth, ‘you can do it’ inspirational type writing, even some particularly thought-provoking Facebook updates … you get the idea.

Of course I often don’t finish what I read. Who has the time? And besides which, there is just so much great stuff out there that it’s impossible to get through it all.

I download free e-books, I buy books for kindle, I invest in awesome self-help programs fitting any or all of the above, and then I either don’t get through them or occasionally even don’t start them!

the key to effortless abundance and living your best life

There is one book I finished recently, and it’s a bit of a stand-out (obviously, or I wouldn’t have finished!). I think it’s worth talking about, and sharing with you.

The key theme to this book is the concept that life not only can be effortless but that the very best results can only be achieved by working with the natural grain of thing. Actually, I should say – it’s not just a book; it’s a program; one that only takes a few minutes every day for 30 days and really does shift your thinking. Any way, this idea was deeply appealing to me. I’ve always been one to rebel a bit and do the opposite of what everyone else is doing! At least this time it’s definitely good for me

isn’t it time to stop settling for second best?

The program is called Effortless Abundance: Thirty Days to Change Your Life in the first place. I must admit I couldn’t help but be curious about a program that quoted Buddha (“a jug fills drop by drop”) alongside Charlie Brown (“nothing seems to change much from day to day, but pretty soon everything’s different”), but really it was that whole thing about living my best life that got me. About living a truly INCREDIBLE life.

And as one of my Woman Incredible readers commented just today, isn’t that what we all really want?

The Effortless Abundance program basically lays out for you, step by step, how to dramatically change your life for the best… in only 30-days. Of course you have to want it.

change is hard! but SO worth it.

I must admit, I found it a little hard going at first. I always find it tough to calm the beast that is my mind, and I think I did myself a disservice by trying to read the whole thing through within a week or so (I’m curious and I like to break rules sometimes!) rather than just stick with one day worth of content at a time, for the designated 30 days. When I did follow the rules (okay, I still skipped a few days and took about 40 in total) I found it interesting how easy it was to follow. It reminded me of a favourite new concept of mine, which I picked up from Mary Jaksch on the launch post of Woman Incredible. It’s the idea of deliberately choosing things that are ridiculously easy to implement. That way you can’t help but succeed!

I found it was quite interesting to do the little exercises and feel like I was actually starting to understand some of the weird and limiting thoughts that churn through my mind, and after the first 10 days or so I noticed a gradual creeping sense of calm. The book ties in to much of what I believe and teach on focusing on the really important stuff, or doing only what matters most in keeping with your values and dreams.

stop simply existing and start moving your mind!

Do you ever feel like you’re stuck in a rut or constantly settling for next best? I know we all do from time to time. Now affirmations and feel-good stuff can only get you so far, but here are some of my favourites of these from the Effortless Abundance program just to energise and inspire you -

To resist change is to become stuck and it seems clear that, if we are to be happy and successful, if we are to keep growing, experiencing the kind of life we desire, then we need to embrace change, welcome it and live creatively with it.

When you work with the natural flow of the universe, you can become anything you want and experience anything you choose.

Abraham Lincoln said ‘If I had six hours to chop down a tree, I’d spend the first four hours sharpening the axe.’ So why not spend some time getting to know who you really are?

If you want to change, you must start the process in your mind first. When you see yourself as being fit and healthy, then going to the gym and eating well will be natural.

Above all else, we need to realize that we are in control. We are in the driving seat. One could say that life does not happen to us, but that we happen to life.

And my absolute favourite – ‘in a year from now, you may wish that you had started today.’

can you put a price on a new you? actually, yes – a pretty good one!

Of course if you’d like to go further than just the last few minutes of musing and ponderment and actually take some action then I’d highly recommend this program. Effortless Abundance is normally $18.50, but for Body Incredible readers I have finagled a 25% discount which you’ll get simply by following this link and checking out the details! That brings the cost of the entire program down to just $13.75!

I do have to say though, it’s not for everyone. It’s for you if you are already a thinker, if you already believe that life and achieving your dreams is not about making do. It’s for those who still dream big, but sometimes distract themselves along the way. And it’s definitely for you if you like to self-analyse! Who doesn’t now and then

Remember -

I’m guessing you probably have, since the feedback I’ve had since starting my Skins challenge is mostly:

a) people think Skins and compression gear in general (there are other great brands as well of course) is AWESOME and

b) I seem to be the only gym or training junkie out there who has never tried them!

Well, I can honestly say after 3 weeks of wearing my new Skins 3/4 tights nearly 24 hours a day (and actually 24 hours a day on a few recent occasions), that I am a convert with a capital ‘C’! I am definitely going to test out some other brands before I confess an undying love affair with Skins, but the compression wear idea? So loving it! And so never thought I would be! If you’ve never tried them – especially for running (wow, by the way), then I highly recommend it.

this is how i train: skins-style

Mon April 4: Backyard kettlebell workout. Today is Day 1 wearing my Skins on the Skins challenge. Not sure if it was the tights or the weekend leg-rest, but I managed 300 x 24kg swings in 21 minutes when I usually do 240 in 19-20 minutes. Whoo! I also did 2x 20 minute walks this morning, to and from playgroup. I don’t really count walking as training … but it is a nice bonus!

Monday review: I’m used to training in shorts only* … I overheat really quickly when I’m training and it takes a pretty damn freezing day for me to wear long pants! Fortunately for me the sun went in right as I started my workout, and I really smasghed through. I was a sweaty mess at the end, so much so that I couldn’t even face real food for an hour and just had a shake. Very unlike me! Not sure if it was the Skins or the weekend rest from legs but I really noticed how much I was squeezing my gluts today; way more than normal.

Tuesday April 5; workout 1: 20 minutes of tready sprints this morning. Thought I’d hate running in long pants but actually liked feeling very snug and secure. Not that (I hope!) I usually bounce around too much anyway though! Workout 2: 45-minute circuit weights workout at Result Based Training. Advanced GBC style.

Tuesday review; written first thing in am: back is absolutely SCREWED this morning; but that’s because I spent 3 hours in heels last night! I gave my 90-minute Lean Living presentation at R.B.T, and stupidly ran around (even vacuuming my office) before it in heels. So basically that is distracting me from any possible comments about my leg fatigue! I’ll be doing sprints later today, as well as some circuit training, so I’m sure I’ll have better feedback at that point!

Wed April 6: 50-minute pure Poliquin GBC workout, highlights being duck leg press, 4021 x 15-20 reps (OUCH!) and one of my faves, L-lateral raises. Plus lots more, including some vein-popping hammer curls. Ran out of time for D1 and D2, so will go back later and finish it off with a bonus 15 minutes (which I forgot; by the way )

Wednesday review: the Skins thing … to be completely honest I set out on this little challenge thinking it will just be kinda fun to document my training for a few weeks, but not really expecting to notice anything different in terms of recovery. After all, how much of a difference can these supposed wonder-pants make in just a few days or even a week? Well I’m not even quite half-way through the training week, so I guess it’s still too early to say … but I have to admit I’m sort of starting to love these pants. Now I haven’t tried other brands, so I can’t comment on Skins compared to whatever else, but as I mentioned this is my first time wearing compression gear and I really think it’s making a difference. I don’t know if it’s because the pants are so tight or because they’re actually doing something, but I’m definitely not as aware of leg fatigue as what I would normally be!

Thursday April 7: A very simple and to-the-point kettlebell workout: 300 reps in just over 20 minutes Sweaty fun!

Friday April 8: I hit the gym for a little made-up-on-the-spot German Volume Training. I had left myself only 30 minutes to train before having to jet off to a seminar, so I smashed out 10 sets of 10 reps of wide grip deads superset with BB military press. Basically zero rest time. This left me so pumped that I hit the treadmill for some tabata-style sprints. I was on a roll so I kept it going until I got to 10 minutes – by which time I’d completely used up my showering and eating time!

Friday and Saturday review: I really gave those tights a run for their money over these two days as I ended up wearing them for 12 hours a day at the conference. Sitting around for hours on end was no fun for my back and hips, but I do have to say that despite all the heavy duty training getting ready for my photo shoot last Tuesday I really think my legs are less fatigued than normal. This is especially note-worthy considering the use of compression gear has coincided with me returning to sprints for the first time since giving birth.

the challenge extended – plus a $250 giveaway!

I still haven’t slept in compression gear yet. I’m building up to doing some super-high-speed sprints next week, so I think I’ll save it for then. I’ll let you guys know how I go! I’m also going to test out some other brands of compression gear, just to keep things fair, and I’d also like to try some upper body compression gear. One thing I do really like about Skins is the style; they actually look okay, if not good! I have to admit I was worried about looking terrible but they’re pretty fashion-friendly!

If you’ve tried compression gear and haven’t already let me know your thoughts on Facebook then make sure you drop a comment in the box below!

From e-books and info courses to real life books, audio and video packs, and sometimes even new sports performance goodies.

Here’s the thing though. You guys actually don’t get to hear about most of the stuff I am asked to review. Even if they offer me stuff for free for either myself or for you.

I have no interest in promoting something I don’t see at least some use for and benefit of. Hopefully several benefits! A recent example is I was offered over $500 worth of free supplements to use at my will (i.e. for a contest such as this one). I said no after doing some research and realising that – even though the brand was very well marketed – the quality was rubbish.

Long story short, if I’m talking about something on Body Incredible or Woman Incredible then you can bet your bottom dollar that I like the stuff! In this case, I’m actually talking about JUICE!

let’s cut to the chase: can juice be healthy?

As you know, I’m not a big fan of regular juice consumption from fruit, and not even really of daily fresh fruit consumption. I believe that we would only have access to even these natural sugars on a random basis rather than daily. Generally I’d even advise you to never drink juice day-to-day, because it can prevent you from reaching your fat loss goals.

Of course as with any ‘rule’, there are always a few exceptions. Green smoothies, for example, so long as they are predominantly vegie-based, can be a really healthy and easy (not to mention yummy!) way to get your greens. And recently I came across a new packaged juice that I actually don’t mind at all for the occasional post-workout (weights!) sugar-load.

why on earth would you drink juice post-workout?

If you are lean and if you are very athletic, then it’s reasonable to assume you want to either increase lean muscle (to further boost your metabolism), or that you want to at least maintain it. After training with weights you are what is called insulin sensitive. This means that your muscles will quickly zap up any sugars you may consume (healthy and natural is still best!), and use them to grow more lean muscle and thus help keep you lean.

Makes sense, doesn’t it? If super-muscle-growth is a particular goal of yours then consuming a small amount of juice first thing in the morning may even be recommended!

This particular juice, which is called GO BEET is actually more of a vegetable juice – it’s 90% beetroot, and 9.9% apple – and it is a naturally rich source of dietary nitrate. According to the online info, scientific research suggests that the high dietary nitrate levels found in beetroot may help boost endurance and stamina during exercise, by allowing muscles to use oxygen more efficiently.

As inferred above, my take on this would be to use it only post-workout, as I’m not a huge fan of spiking insulin pre or during training.

Because it’s mainly vegetable juice, Go Beet is not super-sweet. It kind of reminds me of childhood BBQs actuallly; probably because beetroot was always a staple on home-made burgers! I love the stuff

If you haven’t heard of Skins, they are one of the most popular brands of compression clothing; designed to improve recovery from exercise. A lot of my trainer and athlete friends use them, but I’ve actually never tried them myself … which is somewhat shocking now that I think about it! Sooo … I decided to set out on a 2-week challenge*

week 1: a peek at my no-skins training journal

To do the challenge properly I’ve needed to record all of my training and recovery comments, so I figured I may as well share them with you. Here’s a peek at what I do in a typical week! I’ve only just entered week 2, so what you see here is without the Skins.

Training

Mon March 28, 8.45am: 20 minute up and down hills walk with stroller … repeated at 11am. (exciting stuff!)

Mon March 28, 12 noon: 45 minute bicep and tricep GVT, interspersed with 20 kettlebell swings … after a massive rainforest hike in QLD over the weekend my poor legs are getting a beating at the moment. I do love those swings though …

Tues March 30, 6.30am: 90 seconds of body-weight squats, lunges, and wall pushes before eating my meat and nuts breaky.

Tues March 30, 8.45am: 210 x 24kg kettlebell swings. I do 20, then 19, then 18, then 17, and so on. Adds up to 210. Took 15 minutes incl. rest.

Tues March 30, 3pm (yes, I do sometimes train 2-3 times p/day … doesn’t take long though, as you can see): 45-minute German Body Comp style full-body circuit at R.B.T.

Recovery notes

Quads feel quite fatigued after constant kettlebell swings the past few weeks (every 2-3 days). Did a great arm and then kettlebell session yesterday and I really felt it this morning when I did my 90 seconds of air squats. I do believe that we are supposed to use our big muscles (and probably the little ones too ) every day, and I often find it strange that my legs constantly feel fatigued. Surely they should be able to keep up with an everyday active life?! Well, they do, but with a little more pain than I’d sometimes appreciate, especially considering how great my diet is. Is it unrealistic to think I can train every day???

Training

Wed March 30, 8.30am: 20-minute sprints; one minute on and one minute off. My first time back sprinting in over a year post-giving-birth! Ouch! Need to ease back into it.

Wed March 30, 10.30am: Charles Poliquin classic GBC (German Body Comp): 60 minutes of pure controlled-tempo torture, on 30 sec rest times today. Highlights included killer hammy curls, rows to waist, Peterson step-ups, and some mirror-lovin’ bicep curls.

Thurs March 31: did 2×20-minute up and down hill power walks (to and from cafe!) with the stroller; that’s it today.

Fri April 1: This morning I did 30-minutes kickboxing at 9am, and then a 40-minute weight circuit at R.B.T at 3.45pm.

Sun April 3: 30-minute GVT (German Volume Training) biceps and triceps at home: 10×10 supinated DB curls w. tricep push-ups. Making room in my belly for Yum Cha lunch!

Recovery

Thurs: I usually like to walk slow but I unwittingly left my friend sitting on my doorstep so I had to really charge home! Was great to have a day off ‘real’ training and get some recovery … I feel like my legs haven’t had a break in weeks! I kind of don’t mind the constant fatigue because I’m used to it; but I do notice my strength dropping from time to time.

Fri: As well as the double training session, I also spent 2.5 hours in heels today as I had to give a lunch-time seminar in the city and was walking around a fair bit before and after, as well as standing during. My lower back is not used to this, so I think it has added to general training fatigue. Overall I feel about normal. Legs are tired as always, hips are so tight I think I need to get in there with a cricket ball (tennis ball ain’t gonna cut it!), and my upper back is seriously grouchy.

Sun: Legs are really still feeling stuffed! I did do heavy front squats in my circuit on Friday, but I honestly don’t think my quads have been this sore in ages. I think it’s all the KB swings creeping up on me … hence taking the weekend off from them when I usually do them religiously!

what’s your take on compression clothing?

I had a massive amount of comments on my Facebook post about this challenge. Quite a few people use some of the other brands out there, but from what I can see Skins is still the fave, which just makes me all the more curious to see what all the fuss is about. Here’s what a few people had to say:

I’m curious to hear from you as to whether you’ve tried Skins or any other compression gear?

*The 2-week challenge has now turned into 3. Based on some of the comments on my Facebook post I’m extending it so that I can spend a third week sleeping in the Skins as well! Not sure how excited I am about that one; but I really want to feel this supposed amazing recovery for myself!

** For a regular insight into how I train, be sure to ‘like’ the Woman Incredible Facebook page!

Post a comment at the bottom of the launch post of Woman Incredible (do it right after your register for email updates!), and I’ll email you a very special 32% discount code for my book Secrets of Lasting Weight Loss Revealed, bringing your investment from US$37 down to only US$25. If you’ve been meaning to get around to checking my book out, then this is clearly the perfect time. OR – read the next point and see how you can get the book absolutely free!

2. Comment on the very first Woman Incredible post as per the last point, PLUS share said first Woman Incredible post on your Facebook feed, your twitter feed, or even on your own blog if you have one, and you’ll receive a second very special discount code, this time for my Melbourne (Prahran) nutrition and fat loss seminar “Living Lean”, bringing your investment from AUD$47 to AUD $27. You’ll also get a free copy of my book Secrets of Lasting Weight Loss Revealed, which sells for US$37! Plus you’ll get to bring a friend along to the seminar for just an extra $5!

But don’t miss out – these last 2 offers are very limited – they will expire at 8pm Melbourne time on Monday March 7th, absolutely no exceptions.

why am i doing all of this? what’s in it for me?

First, the blatantly obvious – I want Woman Incredible to launch with a bang that resonates throughout the whole blogosphere. This new blog/community is absolutely my business ‘baby’, and I’m really really proud of it. The truth is that I know you would probably sign up without all of this extra stuff – I’ve had a lot of messages from readers telling me how much they’re looking forward to it, and if you already read and enjoy Body Incredible then (I hope) it’s a no brainer that you’re going to love Woman Incredible.

Sorry if that’s a bit overly confident, but I really think it’s true.

Secondly though, I want to give you a huge THANKYOU for being a loyal follower of my blog and for supporting me not only in my quest to teach and inspire on health and nutrition, but also in my more personal quest to follow my dreams and become a ‘real’ writer and communicator. Woman Incredible is truly the outcome of one of my biggest every dreams, and it would never have been possible without you.

So here’s to you, no here’s to all of us ‘driven women who simply demand more’ – I’ll see you on Woman Incredible!

PS: Remember – the ‘free stuff’ offer is for the first 100 women who sign up after the 12 noon launch, so if you haven’t already done so then set that reminder. Set ‘em all, phone, laptop, even an automated phone call if you have to!

PPS: I can’t wait to have you as part of the Woman Incredible community!
